What is VegAna?

VEGANA (Vegetation edition and Analysis) is an integrated software package oriented towards the storage, management and analysis of ecological data. The package consists of four programs which can be run independently:

  • Ginkgo: multivariate analysis tool. Oriented mainly towards ordination and classification of ecological data, stressing methods based on symmetric matrices.
  • Quercus: a relevé table editor. It handles relevé data allowing the user to perform phytosociological works.
  • Fagus: floristic records editor. It can handle data coming from field surveys, bibliographic sources or collections.
  • Yucca: a cartographic plotting tool, that enables the user to plot taxa or syntaxa distributions.

Taxon, syntaxon or bibliographic thesauri can be edited within the programs. Data can be downloaded directly from the Catalonian Biodiversity Database (http://biodiver.bio.ub.es/biocat/homepage.html) in XML file format.

How are VegAna programs run?

All VegAna software is written in Java language, which enables it to run on all platforms supporting a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). It is mainly distributed in a web-based fashion, in order to make bug corrections and program actualisations in an easy, straightforward way. VegAna uses Java Web Start technology which is a pre-requisite for the use of VegAna software. Once you have Java Web Start installed, VegAna programs can be started by just clicking on the link from your web browser. See our installation instructions for a more details.
